Of the various forms of green tea, green tea powder is perhaps the one that confers the most potent health benefits to the drinker. Owing to this fact, powdered green tea is one of the most commonly used types of green tea all over the world. There is another reason for tea drinkers’ propensity toward green tea powder – it is much easier to brew and at the same time does not compromise on quality or on the beneficial effects.

Almost all forms of green tea owe their origins to the common tea plant, systematically called as Camellia sinensis. The leaves of the tea plant can be processed in different ways to produce different grades and types of green tea, each with its own unique qualities and taste.

In order to make green tea powder, the fresh leaves of the tea plant are first dehydrated. Following this step, leaves are subject to further drying and finally these are ground into a fine powder. Again, the variety of powdered green tea can vary depending on the amount of sunlight received by the leaves during their final few weeks prior to harvest.

The most famous green tea powder goes by the name ‘Matcha’ green tea. The striking quality of the brew made from matcha green tea powder, is its potent anti-cancer properties. Matcha green tea powder is known to possess strong anti-cancer properties compared to that of ordinary green tea. Also associated specifically with the green tea powder are its strong anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. Thus Matcha green tea is a good remedy for arthritis and can be used to aid in body rejuvenation.

As with other forms of green tea, the chemical constituent in Matcha powder that plays the most important role in conferring health benefits and medicinal properties is EGCG or Epigallocatechin gallate. EGCG belongs to a class of chemical compounds termed ‘catechins’ that are found in green tea.

The most important thing about Matcha green tea powder is that the powder is enriched in EGCG. The content of EGCG in Matcha green tea powder is almost 140 times higher than that found in ordinary green tea.

Apart from using it to make a brew, green tea powder finds its ways into several other foodstuffs. Common food items such as ice cream, jam, chewing gum, and etc can have green tea powder as of their ingredients. Adding green tea powder to foodstuffs can not only impart a calm green color to the food, but also help to maintain its quality and flavor over longer storage times. This is owing to the strong anti-oxidant nature of the green tea powder constituents (specifically EGCG!).

With so many beneficial properties and with multifarious uses, it’s small wonder that the market for green tea powder is blossoming in recent years.
